Day 1 Amarillo Tour Map Guide

8:00am- Sunrise at Palo Duro Canyon State Park!

Start your day 1 tour with a drive to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park that is one of the most historical and picturesque natural attraction in the state. Watch the sunrise and spectacular scenery, camp in the park, hike some trails, go bird watching, view local wildlife, enjoy the scenic points, and take advantage of the various activities like mountain biking, hiking, fishing and horseback riding.  Do carry your camera to capture the rustic beauty of this spot!

11:00am-Amarillo Museum of Art is where to Admire the Art!

Visit the Amarillo Museum of Art that is a 3-story facility with permanent and temporary exhibits. Collections include Asian art, American photography, Tibetan manuscripts, prints, sculptures, drawings, European paintings and American modernist paintings by well-known artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O’Keeffe and many more. Temporary exhibits have featured Dante Maroni , Jasper Johns, Grace Hartigan and many other well-known artists.

12:00pm-Take a history tour of the Harrington House!

A glance into the lives of Amarillo’s famous and affluent past at the Harrington House. Tour the house, marvel at the architecture and check out display of personal items, including period furnishings, English and French antiques, photographs and fine decorative art dating back to the early 1900s.

12:30pm-Stroll along the Historic Route 66!

Sights, shopping and sounds, all awaits at the historic Route 66. Learn about the city’s past, see the historic buildings and explore the charming places to shop and eat here. The district features Spanish revival, Art Deco and Art Moderne elements, all representing the different trends of American culture and history.

And if you find yourself in need of some retail, browse the specialty shops, antiques and craft stores dotted all over the place. It has more than 1 mile of antiques and collectibles. 

All that shopping and sightseeing is bound to build up an appetite- treat yourself at any of the restaurants on site.

2:00pm- Explore space, sound, science and technology at Don Harrington Discovery Center!

After that touch of history, culture and art, make your way over to Don Harrington Discovery Center for some science and technology session. The center features interactive and hands-on exhibits on core science, space, technology and natural history. Inside the center is a planetarium, a Digital space theatre and several science exhibits. Outside is the helium monument.

3:00pm-Amarillo Botanical Gardens, where beautiful flora on display!

Next, head off to Amarillo Botanical Garden that features a Mary E. Bivins Tropical Conservatory which has a collection of exotic and rare indoor plants, and an outdoor 4-acres garden with seasonal plantings such as zeric, fragrance, Japanese and butterfly gardens. Walk the winding trail and enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you. Take in the fragrance, sights and sounds of flora!

4:00pm- Experience the Natural Environment at Wildcat Bluff Nature Center!

Next, drive down to Wildcat Bluff Nature Center that covers over 600-acre natural environment and is popular for the den of bobcats.  It is a great spot to enjoy the local fauna and flora, hike, bike and bird watch. It offers access to historic and geological elements and several types of natural habitats.

5:00pm- Shopping at Westgate Mall!

Day 2 in Amarillo

10:00am- Know about American Quarter Horse history at American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum! 

After a hearty breakfast, visit the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame that features the history of the American Quarter Horse, its role in racing and ranching, and the people who shaped these beautiful animals. It houses several interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, artifacts and video presentations. From Wall of Honor Plaza to equestrian artwork to bronze statues of significant people and horses to a kid-friendly education gallery, this spot has something of interest for every hippophile.

11:00am- Take in some more history at Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian!

Visit the Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian that features the story of Pueblo and Plain Indians and how these early inhabitants contributed to the growth and development of the city. It features the bronze artwork by well-known artists, such as Tom Knapp and Thomas E. Mails. Do drop by the gift shop and buy some keepsakes or unique pieces of art. Also, do not miss the live show from the Kwahadi dancers.

12:00pm- Explore Texas Aviation history at Texas Air and Space Museum!

After the enthralling performance by Kwahadi dancers, head off to Texas Air and Space Museum that showcases the flight history of Texas Panhandle and Amarillo. It features an impressive collection of aircrafts, war planes, spacecrafts, nuclear missiles, airports and rocket boosters. Aircrafts such as a 1930s DC-3, P-51D Mustangs, a NASA Shuttle Training Aircraft, and many more are on display.

2:00pm- Beat the heat at Splash Amarillo!

Spend the afternoon by cooling off at Splash Amarillo.  It is a 14-acre waterpark with a wide variety of rides and slides, including carousel, roller coasters, kiddie rides, wave pool, lazy river, miniature golf and much more. Laugh, scream, smile and be a kid again at this park!

Visit Amarillo Zoo to experience the rare and native animals up close. It is home to more than 60 species of animals from across the world. It also has grazing bison, spider monkeys, Texas longhorns, green-winged macaw, African lions and many more species of animals.

4:00pm- Watch a live performance!
